SIGN Surgical Database
Frequently Asked Questions

When I view my list of Surgical Cases, I can't see a case I just added.
To see your most recent cases, click on the Input Date column heading. Notice the white arrow, if it is pointing down, the cases are sorted oldest to newest, if pointing up then they are sorted newest at the top, regardless of x-rays. To reverse the sort order, click "Input Date".

The list of cases presented on the Surgical Case screen is defaulted to sort the most recent cases with X-rays to the top of the list. So, if you enter a case with no x-rays and then save the case planning to add x-rays later, when you return to the Surgical Cases screen, that case will be sorted way down the list below all those that do have x-rays.
How can we upload our x-ray images faster?
  • Upload smaller image files. See next item for help with file sizes.
  • Upload during the time of day when the fewest people are accessing the internet at your facility.
How can we reduce the size of our x-ray images?
  • Before you take the picture; You can change the resolution (image size) on your camera to a smaller size like 800 x 600 or even 640 x 480 pixels.  This will create smaller image files allowing you to store more images on your camera and reduce the time it takes to copy them to your computer.
  • After you take the picture; You can use a software program to resize your images once they are on your computer.  These are free and easy to use yet do a great job of reducing image size while retaining quality.  You can get them online at:

    Windows: Photofiltre for Windows
Mac: Top 5 Free Photo Editors for Mac.
Does it matter what internet browser we use?
Currently all of the following browsers are being used successfully to access the SIGN Surgical Database:
  • Internet Explorer versions 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0
  • Mozilla Firefox versions 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0
  • Apple Safari (Mac and WinXP) 3.2
  • Google Chrome 1.0
How often should I delete my temporary internet files? (Clear Your Cache)
Every image and page that you view on the internet is stored on your computer hard drive as a "temporary internet file". You can easily clean these files off your computer and should do so weekly if you are online frequently. They take up space and slow you down. The steps to do this depend on which browser you use.

For Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

For Mozilla Firefox, follow these steps:

I cannot get into the database, what is wrong?

When you become a SIGN program, the person you appoint as your SIGN Program Manager is given a username and password. If you lose this information or it seems to not be working, please send and email to signsurgery@sign-post.org.and we will send the correct login information to your program manager’s email address.

Sometimes my access to the database works and sometimes it does not.

To solve this kind of problem, please experiment by going to another computer or to another location to see if the problem is your computer or your internet access. If you can repeat the problem at a different location using a different internet access, then please let us know as the problem may be with the database.
