SIGN Internship 

SIGN Fracture Care International (Richland, Washington) is sponsoring internships for current medical students or MPH students interested in global health, with a special focus on orthopedic surgery in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).  There are two possible intern tracks.   

Summer Research Track: A structured, part-time summer experience designed for students seeking focused exposure to global orthopedic research and implementation science. 

  • Dates: Approximately May 15 – August 15 (flexible) 

  • Compensation: $18.50/hour 

  • Housing: Not provided 

Summer interns will contribute to defined research projects and are expected to make measurable progress over the 12-week term, with expected plan for submission of an abstract or paper at the end of their term.  

Research and Special Projects Assistant: A longitudinal internship designed for students seeking deeper engagement in ongoing research, data analysis, publication development, and strategic initiatives. This track allows interns to take greater ownership of projects, contribute to manuscript preparation, and participate in longer-term institutional priorities.   

  • Start Date: Flexible 

  • Duration: Up to one year, hybrid possible, but 3 months of summer on site, required 

  • Compensation: $18.50/hour 

  • Housing: Not provided 

Extended interns may support multi-phase research studies, cross-functional organizational projects, and time-sensitive leadership initiatives as needed. 

Interns across both tracks will: 

  • Support active studies aligned with SIGN’s mission to expand access to safe, effective fracture care globally.   

  • Conduct structured literature reviews, outcomes data analysis, feasibility assessments and hypothesis-driven research initiatives. 

  • Lead the creation of research summaries, manuscripts, and decision-support materials.  The goal is for both tracks to leave with submitted papers and/or abstracts by the end of their internships.  There are ample opportunities for interns to create and lead projects of their own that align with SIGN's mission.   

  • This role extends beyond traditional research responsibilities. Interns may also support high-priority organizational initiatives identified by the CEO, including pilot programs, cross-functional strategic efforts, and operational/administrative support essential to advancing SIGN’s mission. 

Interns are expected to demonstrate initiative in defining scope, proposing structured work plans, and managing timelines to ensure consistent progress. Depending on organizational needs, interns may also assist with ongoing operational or strategic priorities.
